Bible verses about emotional abuse.
In the Bible, emotional abuse is seen as a violation of God’s commandments to love and respect one another. God calls us to use our words and actions to build each other up, not to harm or tear down. Emotional abuse is contrary to the character of God, who is loving, compassionate, and just.
Ephesians 4:29: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking words that uplift and encourage others, rather than tearing them down.
Proverbs 15:1: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
This highlights the power of gentle and kind words in diffusing anger and preventing emotional harm.
Colossians 3:19: “Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.”
This verse specifically instructs husbands to treat their wives with love and gentleness, condemning any form of harshness or emotional abuse.
James 3:9-10: “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.”
These verses remind us that all people are made in God’s image and that using our words to harm others is inconsistent with our faith.
Matthew 22:37-39: “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’”
Jesus’ command to love others as ourselves underscores the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, which is the opposite of emotional abuse.
